Dream It- Claim it

So, you wanna get Dusty? Well, you're in the right place! Let’s get started

Claim it

I’ve found one of the first and most basic steps to getting to Burning Man is simple. claim that Sh*t. Commit and own the decision to go. If its your time, all the stars will align, even if you face challenges along the way. So, are you going?

  • What to think about:

    • Can you take off work?

    • Whats preparation like? it seems like a lot (it is)

    • Is it feasible for me right now? (this is a epic trip within the US)

    • Why do you want to go?

    • How will you get there?

    • How do you get a ticket?

    • Where will you camp?

If you’ve never been to Burning Man, then preparing for something so unique and unfamiliar can be a bit challenging and overwhelming. What’s it like? Do I need to find a camp? What happens at night? Is it safe? Do I need to go with friends? Why are so many people dusty? Am I going to see anyone who looks like me? Will I starve? How do I get a bike there? What exactly is this gifting thing?

**** With all the questions and concerns there is a page or video out there to get you straight.

The burning Man website has all, and I mean all, the info you need to survive Burning Man. This website will give you the basics because, I want to help you as much as I can, But whatever you don’t find here, go to www.burningman.org. Actually its pretty important to visit the official website to read and watch all the resources they provide.

The Down Low:

Tickets: $475 + tax & fees

Its been known as an intense and stressful part of preparing. Landing the golden ticket for some seem close to impossible. It’s like that time Jay-Z sold out Madison Square Garden that time. Yea, those tickets were going in 2.5 seconds. It’s kinda like that. Lucky for you there are other ticket sale dates and a few other ways to land a ticket. How, sway? you ask…

  • People sell their tickets- Yes, people sell tickets, because they can know longer attend . There are many many honest burners out there selling tickets, but there are definitely those who lack the true burner spirit and will try all they can dupe you. Be Careful and diligent when purchasing a ticket from an individual. Tip: Look on FB pages for tickets, Research their friends, and their past communication on that page. Make sure everything lines up before you get excited.

  • Volunteer with Burning Man. Certain camps that may require specific volunteer hours and tasks is an option to get a ticket and a camp.

So You’ve got your ticket.. Now what?.. oh, so so much more.

What You Need

Let’s give you an idea of all the things you’ll need to survive. It’s a lot, but dont get too overwhelmed, if thats possible. There are tons of lists out there.

A Few tips-

  • Get organized- in packing. And at Burning. Pack things that will keep you organized while at Burning Man.

  • Start saving and purchasing early. I’ve found purchases a few things a month leading up is helpful. it takes a lot off your plate. It adds up quick. Get that Amazon list going and get your goggles and face mask today. Thats when it starts to feel real.

  • Your lodging option can be a big deal. Choose wisely. Think about height, space, light, keeping the dust out, the wind and durability.

Now, The Good Stuff: The Packing List. Taking it to its own page

Remember, these lists can get long and super detailed. You Don’t need it all. BUT, think, what do I need to survive on my own, in the middle to know where, with no options to buy anything, for a week. Then make a clear list of the basics you will need. Then a list of the things that will just make life easier but not an absolute need. Where to look: The camping stores or the camp isles. Pharmacy sections, sale racks, thrift shops, Amazon..

Packing List

Transportation:

Depending on where you live will have a huge impact on your options to get to Burning Man and other costs to consider

East Coast: Fly ( $300- 600 RT)-

The earlier you purchase your ticket the better. It mind as well be a holiday, so to wait is to pay more. thousands of people will be flying into Reno surrounding Aug. 30th and Reno is ready for us in all the ways.

  • Arrival Airport: Reno

  • Airport to Playa Transport Options:

    • Burner Bus ($85 each way)

    • Car Pool ( camp mates, find someone at the airport, look for car pool options on Facebook groups)

Find a camp

A camp isnt essential as there are many people who camp solo even for their first time. But, camping with an established camp can take a lot of stress off your back. You’ll get support, help, and automatically a way to participate and help the community.

What to know about staying with a camp:

  • The all run differently: Find out what the camps mission is. What they offer the community. What will be your expected responsibilities and contribution. What do they offer members

  • You have to pay camp dues. Each camps dues will be different based on what they cover (i.e water for the camp, food, Kitchen, drinks, chef, tent, bathroom, showers, storage etc.)

Lodging

A few options: RV, Tent, Shiftpod, Yurt (two of which I’d never heard of before Burning man).

  • Tent: I spent my first year in a 2 person tent. I highly suggest a tent you can completely close up. Tall enough to stand in and enough room to walk around in.  Comfort and room to organize is key. 4-6person at the least ($40-$500)

  • RV: RV’s differ in size and cost. Other things to consider are the cost to clean, to dispose of Grey water (to be discussed), fuel, generator. $ (1500+)

  • Yurt:  A portable round tent. You'll find many on the playa made of wood. Takes a lot of effort to transport, as they are large and heavy, and to put together. (

  • Shiftpod: “Made of a high-tech seven-layer fabric that insulates from heat/cold/wind/dust/rain/sun, this spacious pole-free tent is super easy to set up; plus, it’s portable and stylish enough for even the most discerning Burner.” ($900-$2500)
